Sotheby's head of chinese artwork, nicolas chow, known as the dish "rather rare".
"we didn't anticipate quite that price however we knew there has been going to be a combat," he said. "whenever there may be a piece of ru-ware, that is a really unusual prevalence, there is usually a warfare, because it's miles the most mentioned, the maximum celebrated of all wares inside the history of chinese language ceramics.
"most cast as properly - i mean, i receive nearly on a day by day basis emails pronouncing: 'oh, i have got a bit of ru-ware, and so forth.' but truly there are only 4 portions of heirloom ru-ware [that] exist in non-public arms."
The bowl's sale trumped the previous $36m record set in 2014 through a ming dynasty wine cup, which became sold with the aid of financier liu yiqian.
Mr liu, a one-time taxi driving force, is one of china's wealthiest guys - and its most high-profile artwork collector.
